I Burned Bridges and Lit Cigarettes with the Same Match

She believed in the bright lights as we walk streets paved with lost souls
I hear the sidewalk scream
The lanterns dance when stars are shy
Or our eyes too entangled with the tenfold twinkle of the city to notice them
When blinded by the brightness the truth is found in the dark
A truth that found us whether she was ready for it or not
Streetlights and neon signs mêlée across her face leaving shadows of her sadness that betray her silence
The lights leave when we enter the front door of her home that feels emptier when my entry fills it
For if these walls could talk they would pray for us
The last impasse, the last last chance leaves me in need of nicotine as I turn my back to her words and face the open door to where the screaming souls beneath my soles were sure to console
I heard her clearly
If you leave don’t come back
I burned bridges and lit cigarettes with the same match
